About Your APP Booking when paying by card – Card Pre-authorisation Explained
09 June 2025We wanted to explain how card pre-authorisation works on bookings you make via the app.
What is Pre-authorisation?
As you are booking your trip on the app you will be displayed an estimated fare. We place a temporary hold on your card for the estimated fare amount PLUS 20% to allow for traffic\waiting time or route deviations. This amount has not yet been debited from your account and the funds are still in your bank. They are just reserved for this trip – For us, its just a way to confirm your card is valid and has enough funds to cover the trip.
After Your Trip:
Once your journey is complete:
• The driver will report the actual fare & we’ll only charge the actual fare
• If the trip costs less than the hold amount, the rest will be released back to you
• You may see the held amount listed as “pending” on your bank statement
Any unused funds are released automatically – we report the fare at the end of the trip and your bank is in control of releasing the unused funds back to your account. This is not something VGT is in control of and, depending on your bank, can take 3–5 working days.
Why We Do This:
• It helps to reduce fraud and ensures there are funds available for the fare.
• It reduces the chance of payment issues
• It keeps your trip quick and hassle-free
